Food Delivery App Stats

Food Delivery apps have been a lifeline during the pandemic. Online groceries made quarantining easier, while delivery-on-demand allowed people to eat their favorite meals even though they could not visit the restaurants they love in person.

Growth and Use

Taking a look at the trends for Food Delivery apps in 2020 and 2021

The pandemic helped to boost food and grocery delivery growth significantly in 2020. According to data from eMarketer, Grocery apps saw user growth increase by nearly 41%, and Food Delivery by 32.7%.

The trend may be reversing in the new year, but habits of convenience can stick. Globally, App Annie data shows that weekly sessions in Food and Drink apps continued to rise, even as some places eased lockdowns while others re-enforced shelter-in-place.

Food Delivery apps have historically had little staying power. In past data shared by Adjust, only 12.5% of users will reopen a Food Delivery app a day after installing it. However, this isn't surprising, as few users will order food delivery every day. Grocery shopping sees more weekly use, with activity peaking on Wednesday's, according to Google Trends.

At the start of 2020, third-party delivery represented less than 5% of overall restaurant spend. It peaked in April at approximately 15% but has remained a popular choice, leveling out recently around 12% of all restaurant spend in January 2021.

Demographics

53% of younger Americans say they've ordered from a restaurant online or through an app due to COVID-19

While food delivery is more popular with younger demographics, groceries are universal. According to Deloitte, millenials order food delivery more than any others at a consistent rate, and will do so post-pandemic.
